Trafalgar Tours: See, View, Visit and Why Not.
Author: Trafalgar Tour Director   Michael Drewell
After 24 years as a Tour Director and owner now of www.AffordableCruisesTours.com I now use my experience to help educate travellers about Europe and Trafalgar.

One of the secrets to knowing what is included in your Trafalgar Tour is the understanding of the terms see, view, visit and Why Not. I have worked as a European Tour Director for over two decades and it’s my experience that the clear understanding of these key terms is paramount in passengers overall satisfaction during their vacation. Let’s face it, a travel brochure is a sales tool and designed to entice you to book. There are certainly times when travel companies take liberties with the wording in order to get you to purchase their product. Having said that if you know how to interpret the copy on a brochure page you will never be surprised or disappointed.
Too often people come away after looking at a brochure expecting much more than they are going to get because no one took the time to explain the difference between these all important items. So that is the aim of this article and video. Please note that see and view are sometimes interchangeable as I will try to explain below.
For the purposes of illustrating see, view, visit and Why Not in interpreting brochure copy I will use one of Trafalgar’s popular Italian itineraries the Best of Italy. This is a 14 day tour of the Italian peninsular and one of Trafalgar’s best tours especially for people who have never been to Italy before. If you have a Trafalgar brochure you might like to open it up at this tour page or if you are on the Affordable Cruises Tours site please click this link and open the tour details in another tab. Then you can reference the items I will be talking about as we go. Trafalgar Tours Best of Italy.
Visit
Visit is the key with see and view secondary. In the first line of the copy they talk about “with our local guide is a visit to the Sistine Chapel” this means there will be a visit and by association if there are any entrance fees these would be paid by Trafalgar. The copy goes on to talk about a visit to the Colosseum and again any entrances would be paid for you and you would be accompanied by a local guide who will be explaining the visit to you.
See & View
As mentioned above these two items are often interchangeable and sometimes expressed in the day to day copy using similar words. For example the Day 3 of the Best of Italy the copy goes on to say “to overlook the Forum and the Circus Maximus” Here the word “Overlook” takes the place of “See or View” and to check this look at Rome: in the Sightseeing Highlights and you would find “Views of the Forum and Circus Maximus”
As there is so much to see in Rome most tour directors and local guides would drive by these but is time permitted like it did on a recent tour I did we stopped at a high point above Circus Maximus and got out of the coach for photos over this ancient arena. Either way this would still fall under the category of See or View.
Why Not, Perhaps, Maybe and Similar Words
The Day 3 copy ends with “this evening why not discover the cities culinary delights”. This is where many people read too much into the brochure and are sometimes disappointed when expectations are not met. With nothing else in the Sightseeing Highlights after the visit to the Colosseum you would consider that Trafalgar’s obligations for the day are concluded. Anything after this would be either at your leisure or there would be an Optional Excursion offered.
Please visit our Trafalgar Tours FAQs page for an article and video about Optional Excursions.

Getting Trafalgar's transfer right.

A London arrival transfer is one the key features potential Trafalgar Tours clients are looking for when planning their European vacation.  As many of the flights into London from most countries are long haul and overnight, the last thing most people want to think about upon their arrival is how I get to my hotel.
London is a city with a population of some eight million people.  It is congested at the best of times and for many above the ground, confusing to say the least.  A taxi from Heathrow airport to the central part of London costs about 50-60 pounds, about US$100 and more if the traffic is heavy.
Do you really want to lug your suitcase and hand luggage through the London underground?  As much as I love the London underground it can be problematic for the person who is tired from a long flight and does not know London.  Even if you do arrive on the weekend when it is less busy there are stairs and obstacles along the way.
These are just some of the reasons Trafalgar Tours London transfer has become a cornerstone of the Trafalgar product starting in London.  However if there was a weak link in the Trafalgar Tours product I would say it was the arrivals transfer. Although a great part of the product it has its problem.
Follow some simple rules which I have laid out here and or the same points outlined in the accompanying video and it will all go without a hitch.
1.     Familiarize yourself with the first couple of vouchers in "Your Travel Documents".  It's a red folder in your documentation wallet. They will pertain to the transfer and pre tour accommodation should your tour have this as part of the package.
  1. Read the paragraph about "TRANSFERS" in the red and white "Your Itinerary" pamphlet. On the same page are the contact details for Trafalgar's Reception Center.
7-11 Bressenden Place, Victoria, London, SW1E 5DD. Tel: +44 20 7828 4388
3.     Once you have collected your luggage from the baggage carousel in the Heathrow (or other Trafalgar Destination, Frankfurt, Rome etc.) arrivals hall.  Attach the large orange Trafalgar tag you will find in your Trafalgar Tours documentation wallet to your suitcase. NOT BEFORE.
4.     Immediately upon exiting the arrivals hall look for the Trafalgar representative who will be dressed in a turquoise uniform and will most likely be holding a large Trafalgar sign.
5.     If the Trafalgar representative is not visible after a few minutes (don't forget the reason they might not be there is they might be dealing with other Trafalgar clients) make your way to the Dot 2 Dot transfer desk.  Here they will ask for the transfer voucher in your documentation folder.
6.     After a short wait of 30-45 minutes you will board your mini bus transfer for your London hotel.  There will probably be some other Trafalgar guests on the transfer to your or other hotels.
NOTE:  It is imperative you give or your travel agent gives Trafalgar your flight information 2 weeks prior to travel.  Even if you have booked your own flights and are arriving on the day the tour starts as per the itinerary, Trafalgar will transfer you to your London hotel.

Trafalgar Tours Tour Documentation Wallet

This video is a must for anyone doing a Trafalgar Tour especially their first tour.

I did the video in Switzerland at the farm of Hans and Ermin while my group was on the horse and carriage ride.

I have covered all the peices in the wallet in detail and there are some very good tips for first time Trafalgar passengers.

For example I cover the importance of the bright orange luggage tag used when they arrive at the airport. The tour vouchers and which ones you should have at hand when arriving at the airport and the first tour hotel.

This video would then lead into the arrival transfer video. It is so important to get the details right at the beginning of the tour. Once you are in the company of the Tour Director you can sit back and relax.

I hope you enjoy the video. If we can help you at http://www.AffordableCruisesTours.coms we would love too.

Trafalgar Tours London Half Day Sightseeing Tour 2009

Most Trafalgar Tours starting in London include a half day included sightseeing tour known as “Regal London”. This tour starts at your London hotel at approximately 8 am on the first day after your arrival from USA or Canada.
Upon arrival at your hotel on the first day of the tour after being transferred from the airport you will meet a Trafalgar Tours representative if you have arrived during their rostered hours for that day. If you arrive outside these hours there will be either and or, a letter of arrival at reception or a notice board which will specify a time of departure for the sightseeing tour the next morning. For your own benefit and that of others on the tour I advise you be in reception 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled departure.
The tour will be conducted by a registered London “Blue Badge” guide. Blue Badge guides are highly trained professionals and have a remarkable knowledge of London. Local guides can bring a city to life and I would recommend a tip of one pound per person at the end of the tour if they have fulfilled your expectations.
The Regal London tour will see many of London’s highlights largely in the West End of the city, including such highlights as Knightsbridge, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. A stop will be made at Westminster Abbey with time to admire not only the Abbey but also The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
The highlight of the morning will be a stop at Buckingham Palace where you will witness the pageantry of the Changing of the Guard. One thing to keep in mind is that if there is rain then the Changing of the Guard does not operate. In this event Trafalgar will make a visit to the Horse guards Parade at White Hall as a substitute.
At the end of the Regal London half day sightseeing tour there will be two choices of drop off.
1.       Trafalgar Tours London Reception Centre at approximately 11:45 am.
2.       Harrods. A short time after that.
For many people with limited time I would suggest looking at further extending your sightseeing with Trafalgar by way of one of their extensions which I will list below.
1.       City and Tower Tour. Daily.
2.       Royal Windsor. Monday and Saturday.
3.       Hampton Court Palace and gardens. Monday and Saturday.
4.       Royal Palaces. Monday and Saturday.
5.       Various Theatre packages. Operated daily.
If you have more time in London then you might consider a full day sightseeing extension which I will again list below.
1.       Salisbury cathedral, Stonehenge and Georgian bath. Daily.
2.       Leeds Castle, Canterbury cathedral and White Cliffs of Dover. Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat.
3.       Oxford, Shakespeare’s Stratford & the Enchanting Cotswolds. Tue and Sat.
4.       Jack the Rippers Sinister London. Fri, Sat, Sun.
5.       Unescorted Day Trip to Paris by Eurostar. Daily.
The last thing you want with limited time is for the tour extension you would like to do to be fully booked so please talk to us at the time of booking and we can explain these options and book any for you in advance so you will not be disappointed on the day.
A good companion video to this is about Trafalgar Tours london Transfer.
